Based on avalanche expert assessments from NGI and the weather forecast for the coming 24 hours, the Governor has decided to maintain the traffic ban on the west side of Longyeardalen until Thursday morning. Longyearbyen local council extends the closure of Road 300 between Gruvelageret and bridge 501 (Museumsveien) until the same time.

- As the weather forecast is now, it seems that both the road closure and the traffic ban on the west side of Longyeardalen will be lifted from 08.00 on Thursday 9 February, says assistant Governor Sølvi Elvedahl.

The decision was made after a meeting between the Governor of Svalbard, Longyearbyen local council, NGI and NVE today.

At the same time, the traffic ban on the upper side of the buildings in Nybyen is lifted from 14:00 Wednesday, as, according to NGI, large avalanches in the mountain side of Gruvefjellet are not likely.
