Reopens for public services
The Governor's Office reopens for services relating to traffic, visas and weapons. Appointments must be made by calling phone no 79024300. The switchboard is open from 09.00 to 15.00.
New regulations for the use of drones
After January 1 2021, all pilots flying a drone that has a camera or is heavier than 250 g, needs to register themselves at Flydrone.no.
Recommends the use of face masks
Due to increased infection on the mainland, the risk of infection also increases in Svalbard. The Longyearbyen local council, the Governor and Longyearbyen hospital therefore recommend the use of face masks in a number of places.
All existing appointments are postponed
The Governor's office is closed to the public until further notice. The switchboard is open from 09:00 to 15:00.
Due to the government's new national infection control measures, the Governor postpones all existing appointments concerning passports/national ID cards, visas, tests for driving licenses and weapon applications. Until further notice, it will not be possible to book new appointments. Contact the Governor if you have an absolutely necessary need for a passport/ID card and visa.
For a refund of VAT, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the attached form, a photo of the goods documenting that the goods are on Svalbard and the receipt.
If you observe a polar bear in or near Longyearbyen
In collaboration with the Norwegian Polar Institute, Longyearbyen local council and the Arctic Safety Centre, the Governor has made warning cards with information about what to do if you observe a polar bear in or near the settlement.
