Purchase of alcoholic beverages in Svalbard requires a special permit and is regulated by quota pursuant to FOR-1998-12-11-1300 concerning the alcohol scheme for Svalbard. The regulations are under the Ministry of Health and Care Services. If you are going to buy alcohol at the liquor store in Longyearbyen, you must apply for a permit.

The application form is called Application for a permit to buy alcohol- individual traveller by boat. The processing time is up to 2 weeks, and the permits are delivered directly to "Nordpolet" in the city center. The Governor is not able to process this kind of applications at shorter notice, such as on arrival in Longyearbyen.
