Opening hours Christmas
The Governor’s office is open for public services workdays during Christmas from 10.00 - 14.00. Closed on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. For infection control reasons, the front door is locked until further notice and the public must book an appointment in advance on telephone number 79024300.
The visa service is closed in week 52 and week 53. Open from 5 January 2021. The Governor asks people who will need a visa, to take contact in good time before Christmas.
Helicopter inspections of glaciers
During October the Governor has flown inspections by helicopter to observe areas trafficated during winter. In general, some glaciers seem to "detach" from the mountain sides, and wide and longitudinal cracks are formed. Climatic processes and steepening due to melt might be some of the reasons to this.

Digital public meeting about the corona situation in Svalbard
Longyearbyen Community Council, the Governor of Svalbard and Longyearbyen hospital invite the people of Svalbard to a digital meeting about the corona situation in Svalbard Thursday 19 November at 17:00 on Facebook Live.
Control of weapon storage
The Governor has routinely inspected weapons storage in the homes of inhabitants in Longyearbyen. The controls will continue in the future.
Covid 19 and travel to Svalbard
This week, new national infection control measures were implemented by the Norwegian government, which also apply to Svalbard. This means, among other things, that unnecessary travel to/from the Norwegian mainland should be avoided. Business trips that are considered as necessary can be carried out.
