New assessment of the evacuation on Monday afternoon
The Governor, together with Skred AS, NVE and the Longyearbyen local council, will have a meeting at 14.00 Monday to assess the evacuation situation in Nybyen and the other measures that have been made due to the avalanche situation in Longyearbyen.
Based on assessments from Skred AS and the weather forecasts, the Governor decided on Saturday to evacuate the buildings on the upper side of the road in Nybyen. A residence and traffic ban has also been introduced on the upper side of all buildings from the south side of Spisshusene to the south end of the buildings in Nybyen. Road 100 on the east side of Longyeardalen is closed from Longyearbyen school / the old hospital to the intersection in Nybyen.
A new assessment of the situation will be made on Monday at 14.00., not Monday morning as informed earlier.
There is a significant avalanche danger - danger level 3 - on Nordenskiöld Land and a large avalanche danger - danger level 4 - in Svalbard east and south.
- The danger is increasing. Strong winds and heavy snowdrift could overload the already weak snowpack. Large avalanches are likely, even some very large avalanches. Cornices are likely to collapse and could trigger avalanches on underlying slopes. Avoid all avalanche terrain and run-out zones, www.varsom.no informs on their website.
The Governor asks people who are out in the terrain to take their precautions and follow www.varsom.no.
Also follow the websites of Longyearbyen local council and the Governor for information on decisions on evacuation and other measures in the event of a landslide hazard in Longyeardalen.
