Helicopter inspections of glaciers

During October the Governor has flown inspections by helicopter to observe areas trafficated during winter. In general, some glaciers seem to "detach" from the mountain sides, and wide and longitudinal cracks are formed. Climatic processes and steepening due to melt might be some of the reasons to this.

The Governor emphasizes that photos and maps do not say anything about the conditions elsewhere than those mentioned. In other words, it does not mean that it is safe everywhere else.

Those who travel in the terrain on Svalbard are always encouraged to take their precautions and be careful. Conditions may also have changed after the overflight. Safety is the individual's own responsibility.
