The Longyearbyen Community Council’s Administration Committee decided today that anyone arriving in the Longyearbyen plan area via airport, harbour or by other means, after travelling from the mainland in the last 14 days, must observe home quarantine for 14 days after arriving in Svalbard. The decision is valid until 3 April and can be extended.

At the same time, the Governor has extended the decision to include all travellers to Svalbard arriving in Ny-Ålesund, Barentsburg, Pyramiden, Svea or Hornsund via airport, harbour or by other means, and they also have to be in home quarantine for 14 days after arrival. This decision is valid until April 3 and can be extended.

The definition of home quarantine appears in the national guidelines for home quarantine in force at any given time.

These decisions have been made to prevent and limit Covid-19 infection and protect vulnerable groups.

For persons who develop disease or symptoms during the quarantine period, the government's current guidelines for converting the quarantine to isolation apply at all times.

It will be possible to apply for exemptions from the quarantine provisions in accordance with more detailed rules. See the decision of the Longyearbyen Community Council’s Administration Committee and the decision by the Governor of Svalbard on the right, for further information on, among other things, exemptions from the quarantine provisions.

Application for exemption from the quarantine provisions for Longyearbyen is sent to postmottak@lokalstyre.no

Application for exemption from the quarantine provisions for Ny-Ålesund, Barentsburg, Pyramiden. Svea and Hornsund, is sent to the Governor of Svalbard on electronic application form: https://www.sysselmannen.no/skjema/

In all cases, it is the employer who must apply for exemptions from the quarantine provisions.

The Governor decides who comes under the exception. The exceptions should only be used where strictly necessary. Apart from this, no exemptions are granted from these provisions.

It should be noted that governmental guidelines can lead to changes in the exemption provisions.
