Heavy fuel oil ban in the protected areas
Ships are not permitted to use or carry heavy fuel oil in the nature reserves on the east side of Svalbard or in the three large national parks in the west.
The purpose of the ban is to avoid heavy fuel oil spills and limit pollution from shipping accidents in hard-to-reach and exposed areas. Instead, ships in these areas must use light marine diesel, which results in less severe pollution in the event of a spill.
The quality requirement for fuel applies to Nordvest-Spitsbergen National Park, Forlandet National Park and Sør-Spitsbergen National Park as well as the Nordaust-Svalbard Nature Reserve and Søraust-Svalbard Nature Reserve.
Vessels operating in these protected areas cannot carry or use fuel other than DMA-grade fuel (in accordance with ISO 8217 Fuel Standard).
