The Governor of Svalbard
Svalbard is a part of Norway and the Governor is the Norwegian Government's highest ranking representative on the archipelago. The Governor's duty is to implement Norwegian Svalbard policy, to safeguard Norway's rights and obligations according to the Svalbard Treaty and to be a policy advisor for the autorities' development of Norwegian Svalbard politics.
The office of the Governor of Svalbard has a staff of 37, working for a set number of years in any one of three departments, which are all headed by the Governor himself: the Environmental Department, the Police Department, the Administrative Department and a Staff Section. During summer, the staff is reinforced by additional police officers, field inspectors and cultural heritage experts.
Subordinate to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security
Administratively the Governor is subordinate to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, but the office carries out tasks for a number of other ministries as well, for instance the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
