Keep distance to Alkefjellet in Hinlopen Strait
The Governor of Svalbard urges larger vessels (over 70 feet) to keep a minimum distance of 1,000 metres away from Alkefjellet in Hinlopen Strait from now until 15 August. The Governor will, if necessary, be able to impose a temporary ban on entering this area.

The reason is the risk that Brünnich's Guillemot, which nest on Alkefjellet, will be frightened by boats and fly away from the bird rock, causing eggs and young birds to fall. Eggs and young birds are also quickly taken by glaucous gulls and skuas when they are suddenly left exposed on the rock ledges.
The Governor therefore considers that larger vessels that approach closer than 1,000 metres during this period run a major risk of violating the provisions regarding movement with due care in the Svalbard Environmental Protection Act. Violation of such provisions will cause action to be taken.
