Evacuation and ban on entry in Lia and Nybyen
The Governor has decided to evacuate the houses in Road 228 and the barracks on the upper side of the road in Nybyen. Ban on entry and traffic are also introduced in these areas (see map on the right side).The ban applies from 08.00 Thursday morning.
- The decision, including point of time, has been taken on the basis of weather forecasts and avalanche assessments from the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) and Skred AS, says Governor Kjerstin Askholt.
The evacuation will apply to the following houses in Road 228: Road 228-2, 228-4 A, B, C, D, E, 228-7, 228-9, 228-11, 228-13 A, B, C, D, E, and all the buildings on the upper part of the road in Nybyen.
The road from Longyearbyen School to the junction to Nybyen will be closed. Road 300 between the old museum and the Nybyen junction is opened.
The traffic and ban of entry also applies to the scooter routes on the upper side of the houses in Lia and from the school to Nybyen.
The Meteorological Institute warns of strong storms and extreme gusts of 45 m / s for Nordenskiöldland Thursday. The avalanche risk is category 4 - high.
Due to the strong winds, dangerous situations can arise in the city with debris flying through the air and damage to buildings. One must also expect very poor visibility, which further enhances the danger. Therefore, the Governor encourages people to stay inside.
The decision to evacuate and ban on entry was taken after a meeting in the emergency preparedness council in Longyearbyen on Wednesday afternoon.
