Snowmobile Ban

- Non-residents

On Central Spitzbergen, two areas have been reserved for wildlife and un-motorised traffic.

The lesser area

This area is close to Longyearbyen, and it offers fine hiking. There are ample opportunities for skiing (cross-country, slalom and Telemark). Popular access points are Nybyen-Larsbreen, Vannledningsdalen, Gruvedalen and Endalen. From the summits of Trollsteinen and Lars Hierthafjell the view is worth the strain of getting there, weather permitting. They can be reached on foot when the snow is hard.

In this area, motorised traffic is prohibited all year round.

The larger area

This area, which stretches from Adventdalen to the east coast of Spitzbergen, offers wide valleys, glaciers and mountains. Skiers can go for long or short trips, with or without dog sleighs. Breinosa (the "Mine 7" mountain) and Foxfonna, both of which are near Longyearbyen, are popular sites for skiers.

The area is out of bounds for snowmobiles from 1 March. However, the routes between Kjellstrømdalen and Agardhdalen, on the one hand, and the route between Bolter-/Tverrdalen and Rein-/Lundstrømdalen are open to service driving.
