The funds resources will be used to initiate and stimulate good projects and
initiatives with the purpose of looking after the lofty environmental goals
witch are set for Svalbard. Deadline for allocation of funding is the 15.th

Tour operator Oceanwide Expeditions B.V has been found guilty by Hålogaland
Crown Court and has received a corporate fine of NOK 300 000, after an
accident at Storbreen glacier in 2007. 23 persons who were on board the
vessel “Aleksey Maryshev” were injured when the glacier calved.

The amount of applications received by the Governor regarding permissions to
travel, to land with helicopter or to do scientific work in protected areas
has increased considerably during the last years. While we do our best to
answer all applications as soon as possible, the thorough consideration that
is needed to satisfy the high environmental standards, may cause prolonged

The Governor of Svalbard has determined that charges against Russian vessel
“Jupiter” are to be withdrawn. Investigation has shown that the captain of
the vessel had sent the catch reports to the Norwegian authorities in a wrong
way. The reports were never received at the Norwegian Directorate of
Fiseheries.

The government has introduced new regulations that prohibit the use of heavy
oils on vessels sailing within the three largest national parks on Svalbard.
A general traffic prohibition has also been introduced, at 8 protected
cultural heritage sites.

Odd Olsen Ingerø has now entered upon the post as Governor of Svalbard.
Ingerø comes from the position as Head of the National Criminal Investigation
Service. This is Ingerø’s second period as Governor of Svalbard. His first
period was from 2001 to 2005.

tour operator Quark Expeditions are to be withdrawn. Charge was issued by The
Governor’s field inspectors as they discovered that the operator violated the
protection regulations of Virgohamna.

2009 all traffic on the wrecked ship "Petrozavodsk" UCJA on Bjørnøya in
position 74° 20,7 N and 19° 05,5 E and on the sea in a distance of 250 meter
from the ship.

The Governor has done several observations of polar
bears close to Longyearbyen the last two weeks. Only last Thursday the
duty officer was called to chase a polar bear that had been seen close to
Vestpynten. The Governor recommends that everyone who leaves the
settlement should carry means to chase the bear in addition to a
rifle.

Pamphlets with information to foreign citizens living
in Longyearbyen are these days being sent to households with foreigners.
The pamphlet is a product of co-operation between The Longyearbyen Local
Municipal Council, The Governor of Svalbard, Longyearbyen hospital,
Svalbard Tax Office and The Office for Social Insurance (NAV).
